Team Staff Responsibilities

Our coaches, trainers, and bench staff are more than just team leaders—they are mentors, safety stewards, and ambassadors of our association. CMHA is committed to supporting each team official with the guidance, training, and expectations needed for a safe, successful, and rewarding season.


Head Coach Responsibilities

As the team’s primary leader, the Head Coach is responsible for the overall organization, conduct, and direction of the team throughout the season.

Leadership & Communication

  • Attend CMHA coaches meetings or appoint a designate when unavailable.
  •  Hold a team meeting before the season starts to review expectations, team rules, schedule, and fundraising plans.
  •  Ensure clear and timely communication with team staff, parents, and players.

Game & Practice Operations

  • Ensure all necessary equipment and facilities are available and safe.
  •  Complete game sheets accurately; have roster and affiliate player (AP) lists on hand at all times.
  •  Confirm officials are present and check-in with visiting teams.
  •  Inspect dressing rooms after each game/practice to ensure they are left clean.

Off-Ice Responsibilities

  • Maintain all team documents, evaluations, and records
  •  Oversee team finances and assign duties like bank account access and reporting.
  •  Ensure adherence to CMHA policies, Hockey Canada regulations, and OHF rules.

Assistant Coach Responsibilities

  • Assistant Coaches support the Head Coach in delivering a consistent and positive experience for all players.
  • Assist with on-ice practices, drills, and in-game coaching.
  •  Support off-ice logistics, communication, and team organization.
  •  Monitor dressing room conduct and assist in maintaining a safe, respectful environment.
  •  Help with preparation and clean-up before and after games or practices.

Trainer Responsibilities

Trainers are responsible for the health and safety of players and must be fully certified according to NOHA guidelines.

Health & Safety Duties

  •  Carry a fully stocked First Aid Kit to all games and practices.
  •  Maintain up-to-date emergency contact and medical info for each player.
  •  Inform coaches of any health or injury concerns.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Develop and review a team-specific Emergency Action Plan (EAP) with staff
  •  Complete and submit all Hockey Canada Injury Reports when needed.
  •  Ensure players returning from injury provide a doctor’s clearance.

General Support

  • Promote safe warm-ups, hydration, and post-game recovery.
  •  Help supervise dressing rooms and assist with clean-up post-practice/game.

Team Manager Responsibilities

Team Managers play a critical role in the off-ice operations of every CMHA team. From financial oversight to communication and coordination, Managers help ensure a smooth and organized season.

Team Coordination

  •  Attend CMHA Managers’ meetings when required.
  •  Support tournament registration, travel logistics, and coordination of off-ice needs.
  •  Maintain open communication between coaching staff and families.

Financial Responsibilities

  •  Submit a team budget to parents and the CMHA Chair of Ways and Means.
  •  Submit an interim financial statement with receipts.
  •  Submit a final financial statement with receipts.

Administrative Duties

  •  Help collect and manage team fees (e.g., tournaments, apparel).
  •  Support the completion and organization of required player and team documents.
  •  Provide general support to coaches and CMHA as needed.
